The Conservatives will rebuild Britain
When Gordon Brown became Chancellor he famously said that he had ended boom and bust. Yet due to Labour’s mismanagement of our economy we have experienced once of the worst recessions in history. This mismanagement has over the last year meant that more than 2,000 people have lost their job every day. The Bank of England has warned that we face a difficult and protracted recovery and even when the recession ends Britain will be left with a massive debt crisis. Under Labour we have the largest budget deficit of any large economy and the highest debt level since World War Two.
Our country is so heavily in debt that our children’s children will still be paying back what this Government squandered.
Conservatives understand that, under Labour, the economy was built on debt. We offer a different route map to economic recovery, based on savings and ownership not borrowing and debt. We will build a new low-carbon, high-skilled, productive and balanced economy that will be the engine for new jobs and sustainable growth for years to come. And we will reform the public finances and system of financial regulation so that no Labour Government is able to bankrupt us again.
As the scale of the difficulties our nation faces becomes clearer every day, we should be under no illusions that a future Conservative Government will have some tough choices to make. If elected as the first Member of Parliament for Witham, one of my first priorities will be to ensure that a Conservative Government does all it can to support the growth and development of local businesses in Witham, and help those who have lost their jobs back into employment.
On a day when we learn that the UKs contributions to the European Union are going to increase by 60% - £260 for every household in the country - it is clear that Labour have lost any semblance of economic competency and only the Conservatives can start to put the economy back on track and rebuild Britain.
