Bus Routes

16th January 2018

Witham MP Priti Patel has written to the Chief Executive of First Group plc, Mr Tim O’Toole, to register her concerns with the plan to scrap Bus Route 72 between Witham and Chelmsford from 18 February 2018. The announcement was made by First Essex on 15 January 2018 and the changes to services will take place just three weeks after fares rise. In her letter to Mr O’Toole, Priti highlighted the impact of the changes including the loss of services to New Rickstones Academy. Priti said:

“The loss of this vital bus service is ill-considered and cannot be justified. Residents are shocked and appalled by the impact that this cut in services which will come just three weeks after fares go up. We have not had any meaningful consultation on these changes and First have not disclosed the evidence base for this decision.”

“This part of Essex is experiencing significant levels of population growth and cutting this service will have a serious adverse impact. First must review and reconsider this decision otherwise they will have let down local bus passengers.”
