Article for Tiptree Tribune

I am pleased to report that at the end of this year that this has been a record breaking year for job creation and employment. Across the UK there are now 30.8 million people in work and over the last year 95% of the rise in employment was for full-time jobs. There are now 637,000 more private sector jobs in Britain and I congratulate all entrepreneurs and businesses for investing in jobs and growth in our economy.

There are also record numbers of women in work, some 14.4 million, over 330,000 long-term unemployed have been taken off benefits and into work through the Work Programme, and youth unemployment is now at its lowest level since the 1970s. The support the Government has given to businesses and the large expansion of the number of apprenticeships since 2010 has helped the number of young people aged 18-24 in employment rise by 109,000 in the last year. Long term youth unemployment has also nearly halved. This is in complete contrast to the record rises in youth unemployment under the last Labour Government.

We should never forget that when Labour were in Government, youth unemployment rose above one million and was growing before the economic downturn began. Young people were left behind when the economy growing and abandoned when the economy collapsed. Because Conservatives understand how important it is for young people to have good employment opportunities, since 2010, Conservative Ministers have worked with business to ensure that young people are benefiting from the strong levels of growth in the economy and have cut taxes to encourage job creation.

In the Witham constituency, this has meant that the number of unemployed young people has fallen by more than 63% since it peaked under Labour. The overall number of people in my constituency claiming Jobseekers' Allowance has dropped by over 60% since it peaked under Labour and our claimant rate is lower than the national and regional average. This is great news for all those in work able to earn money to support themselves and their family, especially at Christmas.

Figures have also shown that wages are rising faster than the rate of inflation, with a 1.6% increase in salaries over the last year. Along with the cuts in income tax by this Government, people have more take home pay to spend as they choose. Pensioners are also better off. Reforms to the state pension have meant that increases mean that pensioners will be £800 better off over the next five years, in stark contrast to the miserly 75 pence increase seen under Labour. The long term economic plan Conservatives have pursued in Government is working and as we look towards 2015 and the General Election, this country cannot afford to put our economy at risk by letting Labour back in. Labour have no economic credibility and plan tax more and borrow more, which will only repeat what went wrong when they were last in Government and will put economic growth and job creation at serious risk.

Because the economy is growing and the deficit is being brought down, the Government is able to invest in new infrastructure. This month I met with the Minister of State responsible for the strategic road network to discuss the Government's plans to invest in the A12 and upgrade the road between Chelmsford and Colchester to a three lane carriageway. This will help ease congestion, make the road safer and promote more economic growth and job creation. I used my meeting with the Minister to reiterate the important opportunity new investment in upgrading the A12 presents to improving connections to Tiptree and easing traffic and congestion problems in Kelvedon and Feering. In 2015 I will continue to campaign for the A12 upgrades to be implemented, along with campaigning for other road enhancements, rail, broadband and infrastructure improvements.

I would like to wish all my constituents have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. During the holiday period, I hope my constituents will have a peaceful time and will be able to enjoy Christmas with their family and friends. I would also like to pay tribute to our emergency services, NHS staff, care workers and volunteers, who will be working to keep us safe and well.
