Article for Tiptree Tribune

9th November 2015

This week we remember the brave members of our Armed Forces who have fallen in battle and conflict while serving our country. On Sunday I was honoured and humbled to place wreaths at war memorials in the Witham constituency and attend a remembrance service.

As well as marking the Armistice and the day the guns fell silent in the First World War, we also pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the Second World War and other conflicts since, including the Korean War, Falklands War, and the recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Reading the names of those who fell in battle reminds us all of the sacrifices that people from our communities have made to defend our country and safeguard the freedoms that we have today.

With Colchester Garrison so close to communities in my constituency, many local families have relatives in the Armed Forces – husbands, wives, parents and children – and we should also pay tribute to the dedication they show. Our thoughts must be with our veterans as well who have served in our Armed Forces.

We can all be very proud of our Armed Forces and I know that many people across the Witham constituency will be honouring them this week.

Later this month, I will be hosting an Apprenticeship Fair in Witham, on Friday 27 November 2015. Over 30 organisations and businesses will be their promoting apprenticeship, training and employment opportunities to those looking for employment or a change in career. Among those present will be the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Careers Office, Tiptree Patisserie, Stansted Airport, the Claridon Group and Simarco. The Fair will be taking place at New Rickstones Academy and those interested in attending can register their interest by contacting me. More information can be found online at the weblink below:

This week the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, will be visiting the UK. His visit to the UK will cement UK-India relations and facilitate an increase in trade and investment opportunities. This is good news from businesses in Essex. Our County has strong access to overseas markets as a result of our ports and airports. Stansted Airport is the country’s second largest airport for cargo and the investment at the DP World London Gateway Port, alongside ports at Tilbury and Harwich ensures that our goods and services ca get into growing overseas markets.

India is a growing market and since 2010 the Government has prioritised enhancing trade links and export and investment opportunities with markets outside of Europe where there is the potential for our businesses to get a foothold. I believe that firms in Essex should be at the forefront of this country’s export revolution and am working with Essex Chambers of Commerce and others to ensure that investment, jobs and growth can come into Essex.
