Article for the Tiptree Tribune

Parts of my constituency have been severely affected by flooding in the past. Flooding can devastate homes and businesses, which is why it important for preventative measures to be taken to reduce flood risks. In recent years Coggeshall, Feering and Kelvedon have experienced problems with flooding, which has caused concern to residents and businesses.

I have been campaigning on behalf of residents in these areas for action to be taken and am pleased that the Environment Agency will be bringing forward a number of options for a flood risk management scheme later this month. The details will be presented to members of the public at two drop in sessions where the Environment Agency will be present to brief people on the proposals and answer questions. These sessions will be held on 15 July 2015 between 2pm and 7pm at the Kelvedon Institute, 17 High Street, Kelvedon, and on 17 July 2015 between 2pm and 7pm at Christ Church in Stoneham Street, Coggeshall.

I would encourage all residents affected by flooding or with an interest in this matter to engage in this process and share their views on the options that the Environment Agency propose. Following the drop in sessions the information I receive from the Environment Agency will be placed onto my website as well so that members of the public can view the options and also forward to me their thoughts on them.

As regular readers will know, I have been campaigning for the A120 to be upgraded and improved. During the General Election campaign, the Conservative Party’s Manifesto for England gave a commitment to put funding towards a feasibility study for the A120 to boost the funds which Essex County Council has committed already to this study. The New Haven Gateway Partnership has also committed itself to this project as upgrading this road will improve safety, reduce congestion and give our economy a massive boost.

I have met with the Secretary of State for Transport to discuss the feasibility study in more detail and press for this piece of work to be thorough and comprehensive so that a robust business case can be made for investment in this road. The feasibility study is vital so that decisions on investment and the work needed can be taken with the most up to date information. This will take a bit of time to complete. However, a thorough feasibility study will lead to a strong business case being made.

As well as the A120, I also discussed the A12 widening scheme with the Secretary of State for Transport. This important project will support economic growth and job creation in this area by facilitating better transport links. I want to ensure that we get the most out this scheme by using it as an opportunity to improve connections to the A12 by local roads, particularly the link between the A12 and Tiptree. Improving this would alleviate congestion in Kelvedon and make travelling easier for thousands of people. Readers are welcome to contact me with any questions they have about this scheme or views on which local roads and links to the A12 need improving.

I was delighted to open the new production line of local Tiptree-based business Mumford and Wood last month. This pioneering and world-beating local business has invested in a new facility, which will help secure jobs and growth for this area. This will help their timber window and door business to grow and I wish them success in the future. It is always fantastic to visit local businesses, especially one with such a strong history, having been founded by two apprentices more than fifty years ago. With the Government investing in thousands of new apprenticeships in Essex and supporting entrepreneurialism, I am confident that we will see many new businesses setting up in Essex in the years ahead.
