Article for Tiptree Tribune

The Queen’s Speech announced a series of important measures to support jobs, growth and aspiration in our economy. Throughout my constituency, we have an aspirational and entrepreneurial culture which will mean that hard working families and businesses will be better off as our plans in Government are implemented.

Among the Bills which have been announced is the Childcare Bill. This will double the hours of free childcare provided to working parents of 3 and 4 year olds from 15 to 30. I will be taking this legislation through the House of Commons in my ministerial capacity and in the months ahead will be working closely on the delivery of this policy. This will help empower families where both parents work with the costs of childcare and follows on from the action the Government has already taken to legislate for a tax free childcare scheme worth £2,000.

The Conservative Government will also be legislating to help get more people into work and build on the record numbers of people already in employment in this country. Over the last five years over two million new jobs were created in the economy and unemployment fell at a record rates. We are ambitious about continuing to build on this record to get more people into work and taking action so that this country has the highest employment rate in the G7.

Our plans to cut taxes for those who work and introduce a ‘Tax Lock’ to prevent rises in income tax rates, VAT rates and National Insurance Contributions will give families the security of knowing that they can plan their finances over the next five years. It will also mean that we will continue to cut taxes and cut the deficit in a fair way.

We will also continue to back businesses by cutting red tape. In my constituency 80% of jobs are in small and medium sized enterprises and our reforms will help reduce burdens on them so that they can invest in growing their businesses and take on more staff.

Residents across the constituency will also welcome our EU Referendum Bill, which will be debated this week in the House of Commons. This Bill will enshrine in law our commitment to give the British people an in-out referendum on our membership of the European Union by the end of 2017. Action to tighten our borders and new controls on immigration, such as electronic tags on foreign national offenders released on bail, will also be introduced in legislation over the next year.

Locally I have been continuing to support families adversely affected by changes in Essex County Council’s free home to school transport policy. Dozens of parents have been in touch with me and any more families affected or with concerns should also contact me. I have been clear in my correspondence to the Council that they should exercise some discretion and flexibility when handling applications and appeals for free school travel.

This month another milestone was passed in the programme to upgrade and improve rail services with the Government publishing the names of the three train companies shortlisted to bid for the new franchise to run services from October 2016. I will be making representations to all three companies bidding to press them to include in their bids clear plans to improve services for local commuters, including the implementation of plans in the Great Eastern Main Line Rail Task Force. This includes new and improved rolling stock, more capacity to meet demand and better customer services. I look forward to hearing the views of my constituents and will raise them with the bidders in my correspondence and discussions with them.
