Article for Tiptree Tribune

Since 2010, the Government has managed to take strong action to support businesses to grow the economy and create new jobs. Around two million new private sector jobs have been created, with businesses assisted by the Government's action to cut taxes, reduce red tape, invest in apprenticeship places and lower the burden of national insurance contributions. Unemployment continues to fall nationally and in my constituency as businesses and entrepreneurs take on increasing numbers of new staff. Over the last few years the number of Jobseekers' Allowance claimants has halved since it peaked under the last Labour Government.
Young people are also funding work as youth unemployment falls under this Government from the more than a million seem under Labour. Local businesses should be applauded for their relentless commitment to create new jobs.
But when it comes to employment matters, we can never make the mistakes of the last Labour Government, who failed to address many of the long term economic problems and allowed unemployment to soar. Getting people into meaningful employment so they can support themselves and their families and learn new skills is a priority for me as your constituency MP. To help support local jobseekers and promote the many employment opportunities across the constituency, I have held regular Jobs Fairs to bring employers and prospective employees together. My next Jobs Fair is taking place on Friday 10 October 2014, between 10.30am and 2.30pm, at Witham Public Hall in Collingwood Road.
Over 30 organisations and local employees will be there, including Stansted Airport, the Army Reserve, Crittall Windows, Simarco Worldwide Logistics, Tesco and Tiptree Patisserie. Further details can be found at the weblink below and I would encourage anyone looking for work or a change of career to come along. Following my last Jobs Fair many of the attendees found employment and training opportunities and I am confident that this time around we can succeed in getting more people into work.
Road safety and highways improvements are two of the biggest concerns that my constituents have. Earlier in the year I undertook a survey of transport issues in Tiptree. From the responses received have been pursuing action with Essex County Council to repair roads, fix potholes and review ways to make roads safer for drivers and pedestrians in and around Tiptree. I am continuing to press for actions to take place. Programming in road improvement works can take some time as schemes, repairs and projects are prioritised. However, I would encourage residents to continue to get in touch with their comments about local roads.
So far this year the Government has provided Essex with over £7 million of additional funding for road maintenance and potholes as well as funding to repair roads damaged by the poor winter weather. This is on top of almost £32 million this year and £152 million during the five year term of the current Government made available to Essex to spend on maintenance and integrated transport. Despite the challenging economic climate that the current Government inherited, resources are still being made for highways improvements and I will continue to press for funds to be allocated for repairs and projects in my constituency.
